Time to go home - Let's pack the car

Daphne supervises the loading.

Can you believe we got them all in? And the luggage too!?

Daphne and her driver left the DC area with five dollhouses in the car.

Three Keystone types. a beautiful mid-seventies Lundby with all the furniture and a garage sale Plan toys (it had to be taken apart to get it in). See my previous posts for pictures

And ...

Believe it or not. they picked up two more on the way home.

Just between you and me - I am starting to think Daphne has a problem.

Hugs,

Susan

  1. It's a wonderful addiction!! Must show these pics to my family so they will understand I am not alone....however, the most I ever "found" in one week was 3...YOU must be the CHAMP!! Love it!!

  2. Thanks Florine; I don't normally find so many in such a short time period, but I made a concentrated effort. I checked out Craigslist ads for dollhouses along my travel route before I set out. That's how I found the Lundby. It was only three hours from home and I drove it all the way to Washington and back. I went to an "antique mall" in the same area and found the people for the Lundby house and two of the Keystone houses along with lots of furniture and accessories.
My friends in DC had a Craigslist house waiting for me they picked it up at my request - the FAO one) and I got another house with furniture from CL down there, and some garage sale stuff too. On the way back I stopped at two other antique malls and picked up 2 more houses and lots of furniture and accessories.
It was like a dream and I am still expecting to wake up. Although it may seem more like a nightmare when the visa bill comes in. lol

  5. Lol! I like how you told me you would have to convince the border guard into Canada that you were not a dealer!!!! CM

  6. Thanks Rebecca; I spent all day Sunday in the kitchen washing and cleaning all my treasures, and I hate housework. I am looking forward t the coming weekend when I can finally play with them & set everything up.

  7. CM; I was so nervous. I thought I would be set to the customs building and have to unload the whole car, but all the border guard wanted to know was whether all the "birdhouses" in the car were included in the amount I declared I spent in the US. LOL. When I said yes he waved me through. So the moral of the story is: It pays to be honest - or at least look honest. (I was totally honest though - I don't know why I thought they wouldn't believe me.)

  8. To all of you who live in the US, you don't know how lucky you are! Our international blog friends will know what I mean.
Before I took this road trip I was ordering my vintage treasures from eBay and often paying customs and duties charges that came to more than I spent on the items.
Antique and vintage dollhouse items are few and far between here in Canada, especially those made in the US. This is one of the reasons I bought so much. To walk into an 'antique mall' and see Strombecker furniture and Keystone dollhouses on the shelves - for anyone to buy - was incredible for me. I bought everything I could find (if the price was reasonable - I didn't buy the Renwal bed that had a $50. price tag - I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid)
Now that I know what you have down there I have to save all my pennies and dollars for the next road trip. eBay is going to miss me. lol

  9. Interesting. Because of McKendry's history of dollhouses I thought Canada was full of old barns with treasures.
And Germany! Give me a break! Trying to send my German pals a swap is like taking coals to Newcastle.
And England!!!! Triang heaven and Dol toi to the right of me... Dol toi to the left of me.
I guess this is what trade is made from... wanting what you don't have. Love your treasure quest. xo CM

  11. CM, if Canada is full of old barns with treasures I haven't found them yet. Yes, Germany has wonderful vintage things and I did buy a whole dollhouse full of West German furniture in DC - lucky for me. The gentleman was a retired military man - he had obviously been stationed in Germany when his daughters were small.
And Triang (can you see the drool..?) Obviously I need to do a road trip in England. Hmmm .. anyone want to join me?

  12. Nicola, it sounds like you need a Daphne to blame your purchases on. Although, on second thought, the family may think you are crazier if you listen to a doll than if you just buy dollhouses. LOL. In any case I had great fun traveling with Daphne and buying dollhouses.

  14. LOL, they always blame the dolls!

Amazing that you could get them all in there, but, I've been known to strap a dresser on the top of a compact car, so I believe anything is possible. ;)
